5 Spring Cleaning Tips for Your PC

Last Updated: 4/26/2017

Spring is here in all it’s sunny and rainy glory. You know what that means. Time to take care of all that dust and random junk that piled up in your home during the winter. While your clearing out all the cobwebs and tidying up your home, don’t forget that your computer needs some love too! You can make your desktop (or laptop) feel newer, a little faster and more responsive by doing just a few simple things yourself. Best of all, you can do all these things for free!

1. Physically Clean Your Computer

This is the easiest one on the list. Simply power down your computer and grab a can of condensed air. You can use this to clean out all the dirt and dust that can accumulate under your keys on your keyboard or in vents/ports. Then take a dry microfiber cloth and wipe down the outside of your machine and any peripherals like your mouse and keyboard. Now that your computer looks nice and fresh on the outside, you can get to tackling the inside!

2. Delete Programs You No Longer Use

If you have some programs that you haven’t used in a while and don’t plan on using, it’s time to delete them! Deleting programs no longer in use clears up space on your hard drive and cleans up your cluttered screen at the same time. If you have a ton of programs with shortcuts, deleting some of those will help make it easier to navigate your desktop faster! If you spend minutes just staring at your desktop trying to find the program you’re looking for, it’s time to clean it up!

3. Clean Up Your Browser

If you spend most of your time on your computer in a browser, it’s a good idea to tidy it up occasionally. Whether you use Chrome, Firefox, Safari or Edge, you can go into the settings and clear up some things. You’re going to want to clear your browsing data, erase cached files, browsing history, and plug in data. It’s also a good idea to check for any downloads you may have forgotten about and don’t need and get rid of those too where applicable. Finally, you can remove any unused browser extensions or plug-ins.

4. Defrag Your Hard drive

Unless you have an SSD, defragging your hard drive is a good way to speed up and clean up your PC.(If you have an SSD, don’t defrag your hard drive because it will wear it out.) Defragging your hard drive takes all the fragmented pieces of information saved on your computer and compacts it. This makes it easier for the computer to access the data and therefore helps it move in a more efficient manner.

5. Run Your Anti-Virus Software

You should always keep your anti-virus software of choice up to date, so make sure you don’t have any updates for it before you start your scan. Once you have your anti-virus up to date and ready to go, do a full system scan. It might take a while so go reward yourself with a nice cup of coffee and relax for a bit while your computer works. Once it’s done, resolve any issues that may have come up in the scan and make sure you schedule some future scans!
